Empowering women through agriculture

For women’s groups in Leir Baawa, support for agriculture sat alongside support for everyday hygiene. SATCD and its partners brought these needs together through a donation of farming and household supplies.
Practical support for three women’s groups
On 31 October 2024, in partnership with MOH Samburu, Hope for Samburu Communities CBO and the Samburu County Department of Culture and Social Services, we donated farm tools, seedlings, Aqua tabs, sanitary towels and water buckets to three women's groups in Leir Baawa.
The range of supplies reflects the connection between work in the field and life at home. Tools and seedlings relate to growing food; water buckets, Aqua tabs and sanitary towels relate to water, hygiene and personal care. Bringing them together recognises that these concerns are part of the same daily life.

Resources that support knowledge
Agricultural knowledge is easier to put into practice when the necessary resources are within reach. A planting demonstration, for example, makes an idea tangible: people can see the task, the tools involved and the care it requires. The photographs from Leir Baawa help tell that practical side of the story.

Why investing in women matters
Supporting women’s groups means recognising women as active participants in the development of their communities. The aim is to strengthen their ability to put knowledge and resources to use, with attention to both productive work and everyday wellbeing.
That is the thinking behind this work: agriculture, hygiene and community development belong in the same conversation. Each matters to the wider goal of helping people build more secure livelihoods.
